Teach Learn Lead Application

I attended a session on personalized learning, and I was intimated by just how scheduled and organized her school was that she could offer several different sessions at different levels all in one three hour block. My school is not structured that way, plus I didn't even know where to begin that mess, so I just took some of the basic ideas and implemented them in one lesson.

In LA 9 we're reading Animal Farm by George Orwell and I always do a lesson on the Russian Revolution since it's the whole point of the book. In the past, I've played a video and given all students the same questions, without any scaffolding. I always have some students who succeed and some who give up/don't start because they have such little background knowledge that it's too much for them to handle.

This year I'm taking a more personalized learning approach.

Students will choose their pathway to success - a Youtube Video or an Informational Text.

Youtube Video
This pathway comes with a 13 minute video, and 13 questions about the intricacies of the Russian Revolution. This is a more complex approach, and it has many extraneous details. Great for a students who wants more of a challenge or is already approaching the task with adequate background knowledge.

Informational Text
I have a few pages excerpted from a textbook on Communism. This allows students to read at their own pace, go back and reread something, and stop and ask questions. I will lead this pathway and be a resource for them. The information in this pathway differs from the previous because it's not as intricate and it actually focuses on two people the Youtube video leaves out: Karl Marx and Joseph Stalin.

Interview
At the end, I decided each pathway contained information that ALL students need to know, so I added a short little interview where students are supposed to ask someone from the other pathway some questions so they learn the basics of that material.

All of this is an introduction to the Russian Revolution, so we'll spend more time on this, but I'm thinking it's going to go well.

I'm curious who starts one pathway, stops, and switches to the other one.
