CIQ: AR 2

This past week was rough.

It was the start of the new trimester and my students were amazing; it was the adults I found I struggled with the most.

I know I keep bringing up the fire that happened over the summer, but the fact is the school is STILL not functioning as normal. Work is STILL not being completed. My students are STILL being negatively impacted because "important" adults in the building and district are not following through on what needs to be done. So I had a pretty negative beginning of the week.

When inspecting my Critical Incident Questionnaire, I noticed I was most engaged with my students and my work when it was concerning the literature we were studying. Both my 9th and 10th graders are doing Literature Circle-type work, and that's what made my week exciting. I was able to create lessons and experiences that students found enjoyable. They were positive, well thought-out, and memorable, and I noticed a huge difference in how I presented these assignments between last year and this year. My students, for the most part, seemed excited and passionate about their choices, whereas in years past, it felt more like just another assignment for them to complete.

When analyzing the more negative aspects of my week, things truly boiled down to my coworkers and "bosses" doing questionable things that left me confused and angry.

So I feel I have two directions I can take with me Action Research:

1. Increase the Positive Experiences with Literature, or

2. Decrease the Negative Experiences with Staff

I think option number one is the most attainable, because I have direct control over that. I'll still be working on decreasing negative staff interactions, but that's not anything that I can work on inside my classroom.

  1. It's interesting to hear that you are still having these rippling effects after the fire from so long ago! It sounds like you are having a hard time and it is getting you down. It might be more beneficial for you to almost "ignore" the negative and create your own positive vibes. I think that since you are seeing such success from your changes already that it would change your moral if you increased your positive experiences with literature. I always find that "fake it until I make it" is so true!! I can come in with a bad attitude, but once I start pretending to be happy, I usually end up being happy.
